ABOUT ME

Thanks for stopping by! You can call me Miss DeMeter, or "Miss D." for short. I love teaching a wide variety of subjects (ask me about underwater basket weaving and rock climbing!), but now focus mainly on the academic core of elementary school (Reading, Writing, Arithmetic). I love to travel, love the outdoors, and love adventure. If you walk into my classroom, the windows will likely be open to catch the ocean breeze!

I grew up in California, in the San Francisco Bay Area. I went to three different colleges... Diablo Valley College and Humboldt State first, focusing on a bachelor's degree in Recreation Administration and a passion for summer camps and outdoor education. After a year working at two outdoor schools (Gold Rush discovery in Coloma and 6th grade science near Yosemite), I decided to head back to college for a teaching license. I attended CSU Bakersfield, at the same time substitute teaching and working as a reading tutor.

Since graduation, I've gone back and forth between working in outdoor education ("science camp") and public schools, mostly due to the economy and a shortage of positions for teachers way back in 2005 California. In 2011, I moved to the Big Island to live with family and begin a new teaching adventure. I taught third grade in Waikoloa Village for a year, after which I decided to take off traveling the world. I eventually landed in Australia for a year, where I experienced substitute teaching in a whole new way.

Hawaii called me back in 2013, and I've been at Konawaena ever since. I'll be teaching fifth grade this year, which I could not be more excited about! The students and staff here are incredible. I'm looking forward to reconnecting with the class of 2024 and their families.

Please, send any questions or comments my way. I hope to get to know each one of my students and their families well, and I encourage you to get to know me too! We will be working closely together (laulima) to help our fifth graders be the best they can be!
